Pollen Degeneration in Male - Sterile Napus - Cytoplasmic Brassica Pekinensis

Abstract
Among the Napus-cytoplasmic B. pekinensis obtained by means of successive backcrossings, male-sterile individuals were found. Present experiment was attempted in order to make clear morphogenetically the male-sterile phenomenon.
It was found that in the male-sterile individuals the tapetal cells become hypertrophic at mid-and post-meiotic stage.
The shapes of swollen tapetal cells are either of club or of swollen sword, with enormous vacuoles at the tips.
The microspores were pressed and crushed by the hypertrophic tapetal tissue before developing into pollen grains.
Nearing toward the stage of anthesis, the microsporangium devoid of pollen grain is completely closed leaving no locule.
